ExtraCorporeal Education Center
Welcome to ECMO Advantage’s EC2!
EC2 is our new state of the art ExtraCorporeal Education Center offering simulation in a realistic environment designed to enrich the learning experience.
EC2 caters not only to individuals, but teams. Individual learners will be given the opportunity to enhance their core extracorporeal knowledge, develop and utilize critical thinking skills and practice and reinforce the technical hands on skills needed to address emergency situations.
At EC2, teams will have the opportunity to utilize their equipment, circuitry and organizational philosophies to build an integrated program that supports their patient population(s) in the safest way leading to decreased complications and better outcomes.

The ExtraCorporeal Education Center provides a realistic environment for both the novice and experienced learner. Scenario based simulations are designed with specific objectives to evaluate knowledge base, critical thinking skills, and technical performance. Our governing philosophies promote patient safety, enrich knowledge, refine technical expertise, and foster strong teamwork with effective interpersonal communication.
5-Day ECMO Course
This comprehensive 5-day training course is designed to train clinicians for their role as an ECMO Specialist. Our course is formatted to provide the educational content suggested by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO). ELSO has published suggested “Guidelines for Training and Continuing Education of ECMO Specialists”. These guidelines provide a framework governing structure, content, evaluation and on-going training requirements essentially outlining standards that can be used by organizations training clinicians to function as ECMO Specialists. Adherence to and building upon these concepts ensure that a solid knowledge base is established. When partnered with hands-on and/or simulation training the learner develops a strong skill set to provide quality care to the patient receiving extracorporeal life support.
This course is designed primarily for the novice, combining didactic presentations with hands-on equipment, circuitry wet labs and progressive simulations. This course may be beneficial as a refresher course for those wishing to reinforce their prior training. The course content will cover both VA and VV modalities and the hands-on wet labs and simulations will be conducted in our new Extracorporeal Education Center. Integration of collaborative ECMO Advantage philosophies set the cornerstone for your learning experience leading to improved safety, better outcomes and decreased complications.
Current learning strategies allow for the conveyance of relevant didactic content which is then reinforced when incorporated into specific simulations. This format is designed to enhance the learning experience by immersing the learner into a realistic environment in which they must appropriately apply the knowledge they have acquired to resolve the issue at hand. It incorporates repetition, layering of information and progressive development of specific technical skills used when addressing routine and emergent situations.
Debriefing is an essential component of training and time for this process is allocated at the conclusion of each simulation. A debriefing session provides immediate learner feedback and is an opportunity for the sharing of information and positive reinforcement. The intent of this course is to promote patient safety by enriching knowledge, technical expertise, teamwork, and interpersonal communication required in today’s healthcare environment.
Attendance is purposely limited to a small number of learners to provide the greatest opportunity for a valuable experience and allowing adequate time for hands-on training.

ECMO Advantage offers learning experiences customized to your specific group needs. If you have a group of 8 or more, please contact us to discuss your specific situation and allow us to share the ECMO Advantage with your team.
This course is designed for the experienced ECMO Specialist (RN, RRT, CCP, or MD) with a working knowledge of V-V and V-A extracorporeal life support. Utilizing a progressive simulation format, each experienced learner will participate in scenario based simulations designed to challenge their knowledge, critical thinking skills and technical expertise in managing an ECMO patient.
Solely simulation based, this course will not include formal didactic sessions but can be used in competency maintenance or as a venue to introduce new concepts and rehearse procedural skills. At the conclusion of each simulation, a debriefing session provides immediate learner feedback and an opportunity for the sharing of information. The intent of this course is to promote patient safety by enriching knowledge, technical expertise, teamwork, and interpersonal communication required in today’s healthcare environment.
